Maria Everdina Reijs, better known as Rita Reys is a jazz vocalist and instrumentalist from Holland, (born in Rotterdam on December 21, 1924).
In 1960, at the Juan Les Pins Jazz Festival in France, she was awarded the title of "First European Lady-Jazz".
Her father was a cellist and taught, the mother was a dancer. The family did not listen to jazz, but listened to classical music, preference
Gave Tchaikovsky and Chopin.
On the jazz scene Rita Reis brought her first husband, a jazz drummer
Wessel Ilcken, whom she met in 1943
The collective was called Rita Reys & the Wessel Ilcken Sextet. In 1950 Rita and her husband organized their "brigade" "Rita Reys Sextet".
Rita Rice died on July 28, 2013 at the age of 88 years. During her career she was awarded a huge number of international prizes and
Awards, has released 44 discs in a variety of formats, including dvd.
