When Stones Throw Records released "NOW" by the Stark Reality in 2003, they put out two fairly different versions in the United States and Europe.
The States got a single disc, 12-track album consisting of eight songs from "The Stark Reality Discover Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop" and four bonus tracks: Roller Coaster Ride, Too Much Tenderness, Sunday's Song and Say Brother. Stones Throw then made a separate release in the US, a six track EP called "1969." This release had several songs already included on American version of NOW (Roller Coaster Ride, Too Much Tenderness and Sunday's Song) as well as Pretty Music, Nani, and Red Yellow Moonbeams.
Europe's release of NOW was quite different: it was a two disc set, with disc one including only songs from the "Hoagy Carmichael" album. Disc Two was labeled "1969," and included all previously listed songs, as well as a never-before-released live performance, "Acting, Thinking, Feeling."
Long story short, that's what this compilation is. Why Stones Throw made this convoluted decision of multiple releases is anyone's guess.

label:SteepleChase

Rich Perry's eighth Steeplechase disc makes a point of featuring the little-known trumpeter/composer Steve Lampert, who penned all but two of the tunes for the session. Bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Jeff Hirshfield complete the lineup. The absence of a chordal instrument makes for a lot of harmonic openness, and that serves these sparse, freebop-oriented tunes just fine. Lampert, playing muted all the way through, proves to be a fluid and compelling soloist. As a composer, he gravitates toward unusual rhythmic feels, the best examples being the modified 12-bar blues "Gymel" and the agitated double-time "Penance." Perry seems to thrive on these relatively abstract themes; his interaction with the rhythm section is typically laid-back and imaginative.

Milt Hinton was one of the busiest bassists in the history of recorded music and not just in the world of jazz. But Hinton led relatively few dates of his own during his long career; when he got the opportunity, he made the most of it. This 1976 session features him leading a trio with pianist Cliff Smalls and drummer Sam Woodyard (who sticks to brushes for most of the date), mixing originals and standards in equally swinging fashion. The brisk opener features a fine solo by the leader and playful exchanges between the three men. Hinton's take of the old spiritual "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" is a real swinger, not nearly as dramatic as the unaccompanied versions he became famous for later in his career. Hinton's warm arco bass introduces a lush treatment of Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss" before he returns to playing pizzicato. Smalls and Hinton share the limelight in the delightful take of "How High the Moon." Since the bassist spent so much time on the road, it isn't surprising that he composed a bluesy tribute to his devoted wife Mona, "Mona's Feeling Lonely," though he doesn't sing his lyrics on this version. The leader showcase his formidable bass-slapping technique in the superb rendition of "(Back Home Again In) Indiana." This Black & Blue CD reissue of the earlier LP adds a bonus track, a brisk blues called "Walking Through the Woodyard" that features the drummer to good effect. It is odd that the label thoughtlessly omitted composer credits to the songs. Fans of one of the greatest bassists in jazz history should pick up this release immediately.

09 - Fluxus Epilogue

The LABtrio is made up of three young musicians with strong personalities, endowed with an approach to music as fresh as it is adventurous. Since the trio's founding in 2007, awards and other prizes (including a superb double - the Audience Prize and Grand Prize - at the prestigious Avignon Tremplin Jazz festival in 2011) have constantly reinforced the evolution of a group that is both deeply rooted in the great tradition of the jazz piano trio and attuned to current musical styles. The result of these skillfully proportioned mixtures is an original music in which numerous ingredients are perceptible, always subtly blended. The trio's very acoustic universe conceals an urban jazz that flirts with underground and hip-hop cultures. Their first opus, Fluxus constitutes testimony to what is the jazz of today, seen by this new generation of musicians. These three will be some of tomorrow's great masters.

The title of Erik Deutsch's Demonio Teclado means "Keyboard Demon"—and indeed he is. Raised in Washington, DC and Nashville, Deutsch spent ten years in Colorado honing his craft, receiving a degree from the University of Colorado in piano performance, plus studying and playing with pianist Art Lande and gigging with trumpeter Ron Miles. In the mid-2000s Deutsch moved to New York and jumped into the New Brooklyn Jazz scene; he also started working with a wide variety of musicians such as singer-songwriters Norah Jones and Roseanne Cash, and most notably spent three years in guitarist Charlie Hunter's band. A talented member of the new generation of jazz musicians, Deutsch's star just keeps shining brighter with each project.

Deutsch characterizes the music on Demonio Teclado as psychedelic soul-jazz, and the description is apt: the songs are full of absorbing grooves overlaid with appealing electronic voicings. Seven of the nine songs are Deutsch originals, and the keyboardist proves himself an inventive composer with a fine ear for melody. "Funky Digits" is an exuberant tune with a tight, energetic arrangement, including a down-and-dirty solo from trumpeter Jon Gray, who provides a hefty dose of soul throughout the CD. "Future Burger" has a joyful, super-funky groove that showcases the talents of guitarist Brandon Seabrook, while "DDT" is a full-bodied song with a deep droning groove, woven throughout with wild and woolly electronic excursions.

Deutsch takes it slower on the enjoyably ominous "Creeper," and displays a more romantic side on the wistful "Ms. Pelican" and beautifully spacious "Lover's Eyes." For his two covers, Deutsch takes a pass on the Great American Songbook: Ike Turner's "Getting Nasty" is bright, gritty, and swinging, with Glenn Taylor's steel guitar solo full of nicely bending notes; and Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down" is simply gorgeous, a heart-first dive by Deutsch into the haunting melody line.

In his autobiography, the great pianist Oscar Peterson declared, "Young players need not feel confined by conventional sounds—nor do they need to abandon them entirely: the scope for creative merging is enormous, and new and different dimensions to music beckon." Deutsch has clearly heeded this call, and his psychedelic soul-jazz is a welcome expansion. Yet this is just one color on Deutsch's extensive palette: with such striking talent and wide-ranging experience, his next step is bound to be worth hearing.

Eric Bell Band - A Blues Night In Dublin (2002)

One of the reasons why guitarist Eric Bell bailed out of Thin Lizzy after the group's third album was the other musicians' lack of interest for the blues. Twenty-five years later, in the second half of the '90s, Bell had finally found a group tailored to his needs. This trio comes back to the original idea of Thin Lizzy as a Cream-derivative power trio, with the exception that Bell sticks mostly to road-tested standards. This concert was recorded in Dublin (the guitarist is Irish) in June 1998, two years after the album Live Tonite...Plus! The set list has not changed much -- the first four songs are presented in the exact same sequence. People who already own the previous record will find this one repetitive, but track list aside, this is a strong performance, spirited and heartfelt. Bassist Tony Williams and drummer Andy Golden form a tight rhythm section, perfect for the blues-rock inhabiting Bell's voice. Three recent originals (from the trio's then-recent studio album) are sandwiched between a clever selection of standards, including "The Stumble," "Things We Used to Do," and Albert Ayler's "Too Tired." Bell plays a nasty guitar, just a bit raspier than what is usually heard in the field, which gives him an edge to compensate for his average vocals. Highlights include "Shake Your Money-Maker" (in Paul Butterfield's adaptation), "Baby, Please Don't Go," and Bell's own "You Were the One." A couple of feedbacks and odd endings remind us of the live factor, giving the CD an authentic charm. Well done.
