Third World Love was founded in 2003 in Barcelona for a tour. Three of its four members (all but the American drummer Daniel Freedman) were born in Israel and the group has since become very popular in Israel and Europe. Three of the musicians currently live in New York (pianist Yonatan Avishai resides in France) and the band has gradually become better known in the United States. While their music has accurately been described as a mixture of Middle Eastern and African music along with jazz and rock, in reality Third World Love is an advanced jazz quartet that is influenced by the musicians' ties to Israel, particularly in its often-haunting compositions. New Blues is their fourth CD and it is a particularly strong all-round effort. Interpreting intriguing originals by three of its members (all but Freedman) along with Duke Ellington's "So," the performances feature lyrical and emotional playing by trumpeter Avishai Cohen, versatile solos and accompaniment from pianist Yonatan Avishai, intelligent support and soloing from bassist Omer Avital, and solid backup by drummer Daniel Freedman. The eccentric and exciting "New Blues (Ain't No Thing...)" is a high point. Recommended.

J.J. Johnson - trombone
Bobby Jaspar – tenor sax, flute
Tommy Flanagan - piano
Wilbur Little - bass
Elvin Jones – drums
Reissue with the latest remastering. One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while working in a burning mode that recalls some of his best bop sides from the early years – particularly his work on Blue Note.
Bobby Jaspar's in the frontline with JJ – playing both tenor and flute – and rhythm is from a trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wilbur Little on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Jones' touch on the kit gives the album a nicely dancing feel throughout – and is a real reminder of his simple genius in an early setting like this.

Really, why should this music be called avant-garde? Should a band as gloriously fun as Phillip Johnston's Big Trouble really be given a stylistic label equated by many with either difficult art music or deadly serious free jazz? Yes, in the '90s jazz world, the enormously engaging saxophonist/composer and his band of accomplished musical pranksters definitely fell on the avant side of things, but that was more a reflection of the sorry state of the mainstream, in comparison to which, of course, any era's avant-garde is defined. In a rational world, Johnston's first post-Microscopic Septet project would be seen as appealing to a very broad audience segment -- say, those with ears on the sides of their heads. The ensemble's debut recording is unfailingly good-natured, in contrast to the work of the best-known New York downtowner at the time (who sat in awhile with the Micros), John Zorn. In addition to the Micros, of course, another touchstone to Big Trouble is Holland's Willem Breuker Kollektief, but Johnston's band flirts with humor and irony without ever falling into overt schtick. Big Trouble's expert balance of serious and light is achieved through ingenious arrangements that engage the heart and emotions with the most expressive qualities of creative and even free jazz, while wrapping the music in a bright, nearly pop music sheen. The warm colors of the band's reeds and horns -- including Johnston's soprano sax (his principal instrument), the trombone of Jim Leff, the bari sax or bass clarinet of Bob DeBellis, and the occasional tuba from bassist Dave Hofstra -- also seem calculated for maximum ear appeal. Highlights abound on Phillip Johnston's Big Trouble; there is no weak cut on the CD or weak segment within any cut. Whether affectionately tweaking the music of Steve Lacy, Herbie Nichols, or Raymond Scott, or romping through original material by Johnston, DeBellis, or Big Trouble drummer Kevin Norton, the band constantly throws the unexpected into the mix. Credit Joe Ruddick on keyboards and sampler for a lot of the wacky sonics, as on Lacy's "Hemline," where his synthesized squelches in one channel compete with the rubbery skronk of guest slide guitarist David Tronzo in the other. Speaking of guest guitarists, Adam Rogers emerges as a major contributor to several tunes; he puts the power into Scott's "Powerhouse" and the rousing, swooping, almost prog rockish album opener, Johnston's "The Invisible World." And those are his arpeggios, standing in for steel drums, on Johnston's Caribbean-meets-township flavored "Natural Confusion" (before the segue into the bandleader's swinging "Waltz of the Untouched," in which Ruddick sounds like he's comping on the organ at a baseball stadium). These musicians have a light and limber touch even when faced with daunting complexity, as in the steady rolling groove and multi-layered counterpoint of Johnston's "Chillbone," a lesson to minimalists in how to avoid sounding mechanistic. Throughout the recording, Johnston and his cohorts prove that "accessible" needn't be a dirty word, even in the avant-garde world. If you've got ears on the sides of your head, this CD's for you.

William Thomas "Keter" Betts (July 22, 1928 – August 6, 2005) was an American jazz double bassist. Born in Port Chester, New York, he was nicknamed "Keter", a short form of the word mosquito.

While not the most prominent instrument in jazz, the bass is one of its most essential elements. In a jazz quintet, one of the responsiblities of the bass is to help drive the rhythm section steadily forward while keeping the music interesting. All of this is done in an effort to support the soloist and make them look good (and ultimately make the audience feel good). Remove the deep earthy pulse of the bass and the listener would immediately take notice. When Keter Betts left us on August 6, 2005, everyone who knew him as an artist and a human being could feel the void that will remain with his passing.

William Thomas "Keter" Betts was born on July 22, 1928 in Port Chester, New York. While running an errand for his mother, he heard a parade and was irresistibly drawn to music. He started out playing the drums but grew weary of lugging them up four flights of stairs to his apartment. In 1946 Betts switched to bass, the instrument on which he would become one of the most sought after and respected masters.

Through the course of his career, Betts performed with a list of people who read like a who's who in jazz. Betts played with Dinah Washington from 1951 through 1956. In 1963 he teamed up with Ella Fitzgerald for a musical relationship that lasted an incredible 24 years. He also worked with Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd in 1962 to record Jazz Samba. Betts' memorable introduction to the song "Desafinado" is an excellent example of why he was so appreciated and admired throughout his career. In addition to the legends already mentioned, Betts also played with Clifford Brown, Nat Adderley, Oscar Peterson, Vince Guaraldi and Count Basie just to name a few. In all, he has performed on over 100 recordings.

At the age of 70, Betts was still going strong. In 1998 he recorded his first album as leader entitled Bass Buddies & Blues. In 1999, that album was followed by Bass, Buddies, Blues & Beauty Too and Live at the East Coast Jazz Festival in 2000. All three albums provide a fantastic look at one of jazz's greatest ambassadors. A respected and loved member of the Washington D.C. jazz scene, Betts took an active role in music education by participating in numerous youth programs throughout the region.

Betts will be missed, but his music and memory will live on through the countless people he has contacted and touched throughout his life. Like the upright bass in a jazz quintet, those memories will move us forward with encouragement and a smile—ultimately making us feel good.
Thank you, Keter.
ERIC M. BREWINGTON, www.allaboutjazz.com

Keter Betts' third solo release finds him in the company of his usual musical cohorts, as well as renowned singer Etta Jones. Betts and company run through a program of mostly well-worn standards, but add just enough spice to keep things interesting. The leader himself takes lead on the first chorus of "Makin' Whoppee," holding his round notes as long as the rhythm permits, creating a suspended feeling. Jones (always at her best on blues numbers) gives a slow, memorable reading of "Man I Love," and drummer Dennis Mackrel's hastily written "Spur of the Moment," penned the night before the show, keeps everyone on their toes. Most memorable is Betts' own "Pinky's Waltz," a stirring melody written for his late wife Mildred, and featuring some fine playing from Weldon and of course, Betts himself.

Led by saxophonist Maarten van Norden, Future Shock is a self-described Dutch fusion group who mixes elements of modern mainstream and post-bop jazz with a rock beat. The harmonies are not as complex as most jazz, but, to the band's credit, there are interesting solos on each piece and there is a uniformly high level of musicianship. Van Norden wrote half of the pieces for the recording, with other members of the seven-piece band (and five assorted guests spread out on the tracks) contributing the remainder. Van Norden adds some fun with his sense of humor (perhaps a product of his work with Willem Breuker), but his improvisations are the highlights of the recording. Another Breuker-ite, trombonist Willem van Manen is also featured, and adds some rollicking, gutsy bravado. While there is no recording date listed, the album was probably put to disc in the late 1980s.

The song "Happy heart", written by James Last, became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic (22 weeks in the charts). That album, released in the spring of 1969, was named in her honor. With the support of a new producer, Jerry Fullera ambitious, Andy once again put on a fresh leading the pop charts - My Way Sinatra, Elvis's Memories, For Once in My Life Stevie Wonder ...
The arrangements took the 30-year-old multi-instrumentalist Al (Alan Alfonso) Capps, whose services on their albums will soon take advantage of Frank Sinatra, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Johnny Mathis and other stars. Yes, and Andy again and again be working with Al. Explicit album favorite - songwriter Jimmy Webb, on Happy heart fell as much as 3 of his songs - "Wichita Lineman", "Did not We", "? Where's The Playground Susie" not ignored and country hits - "Gentle on My Mind" , was awarded the Grammy 4, and the owner of two grammofonchikov "Little Green Apples". Do not miss if in this set did not have any awards, but it is much more favorite Beatles "Here, There and Everywhere".
Separately say about the final composition. "Abraham, Martin and John" (ie Lincoln, Luther King and Kennedy) could not appear on the record Williams - it's dedication to good friend Andy, Senator Robert Kennedy, who was killed in the summer of 1968. Suffice it to say that Williams, a staunch Republican, took part in the election campaign of Democrat Bobby - an exceptional case. At the request of the widow of Robert Williams sang at the funeral service in the Cathedral of St. Patrick's "Battle Hymn of the Republic", one of the favorite songs of Bobby - Moved to tears present. And his son, who was born in the 69th, Andy called Robert, in honor of the deceased presidential candidate America.

Co-founder, writer and drummer of Soulive for over 15 years, Alan Evans proudly presents his newest creation, Alan Evans Trio: an inspiring and fresh organ trio lineup. Enlisting the support of good friends and talented players Danny Mayer on guitar (On the Spot Trio), and Beau Sasser (Melvin Sparks, Akashic Record) the trio's sound proves hard-driving and groovy with deep, funky melodies and powerful, rhythmic counterplay. Alan Evans Trio opens a window into another side - an emotional introspection, as dark as it is powerful. Their passionate progressions emanate an electrified, smoky, 70s-era CTI Records zeitgeist. Alan Evans Trio's much-anticipated follow-up album, Merkaba, is the perfect road trip album for the everyday space traveler, and will take listeners on a cosmic funk adventure. With spacey Hammond organ overlays, zero-gravity guitar riffs, and the rocket powered beats of legendary drummer Alan Evans (Soulive), the Alan Evans Trio follow up album to the critically acclaimed Drop Hop, invites listeners to experience an interstellar musical voyage as deep as space itself. Alan Evans comments on Merkaba, I can't wait for everyone and anyone to hear this album. This album is all of me. This album is for the loves of my life and there are songs on here that I never thought would see the light of day but the alignment of the universe made the timing just perfect!

Kenny Dorham's Quiet Kenny is one of the loveliest albums ever made by a trumpeter and a rhythm section. Recorded for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz, the session is not entirely "quiet”; while ballad readings of standards cast a late-night spell, Dorham's three tuneful blues originals, plus "Mack the Knife," swing jauntily. Dorham had worked as a sideman for such innovators as Charlie Parker, Max Roach and Art Blakey before going solo. In his own sweet way, Dorham was a major figure during the 1950s and ’60s. If he was not as effervescent as Dizzy Gillespie, as mysterious as Miles Davis, or as given to skyrocketry as Clifford Brown, Dorham was an eloquent, soulful player with a beautifully understated tone. On Quiet Kenny, backed by the supple piano/bass/drums team of Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Arthur Taylor, Kenny Dorham is at his lyrical best

This 22-track collection features all of the masters recorded by Ike Quebec as a leader for both Blue Note and Savoy -- sadly, far too few. Definitive's collection adds three bonus tracks to the original American release. Here Quebec is heard in fine hard jump swinging settings from July of 1944 through August of 1945, with sidemen. Some of the master takes here include signature tunes such as "Tiny Exercise," "Indiana," "Blue Harlem," "Zig Billion," "I.Q. Blues," and "Jim Dawgs." It's not as complete as the Mosaic set, but it's really an astonishing 22 cuts that sound fabulous and offer a wide-angle view of the many sides of Quebec's blue methodology on the horn.
