Saxophone player, clarinetist, composer, Gabriele Coen first studied music at the Scuola di Musica Popolare in Rome’s Testaccio quarter. Next, he frequented several seminars at Siena Jazz and frequently interacted with important saxophone players (Steve Lacy, Dave Liebman) to finally complete his studies with a degree in Political Science and a diploma in saxophone from the Morlacchi Conservatory of Perugia.
Since the mid-nineties Coen has served as founder and leader of “Kleroym,” which is to this day the most important Italian Klezmer groups. With them, he has become one of the greatest promoters of Jewish folk music in Europe, re-interpreted in a jazz style.
From a family of musicians – his father Massimo Coen was one of the most important violinists in contemporary music – Gabriele was also trained to perform the contemporary saxophone repertoire of the string quartet, “I Solisti di Roma” (The Roman Soloists).
Coen presented the groundbreaking and personal encounter of Jazz with World Music, undertaking a 360-degree journey in the fusion of various musical traditions – Jewish, Mediterranean, Balkan, and contemporary Jazz – combining the production of original works with the re-interpretation with traditional material.

In 2005, Coen founded the “Gabriele Coen Jewish Experience” quintet (Lussu, Berg, Loddo, Caponi). They released their first album, Golem, in 2009 for the Alfamusic label, distributed by Egea. With the quintet, Gabriele reached a new expressive maturity in proposing Jewish music in Jazz style, leading up to his electrifying encounter with John Zorn in New York in the summer of 2010 and his entrance into the ranks of Tzadik, Zorn’s prestigious independent label, which produced Awakening (2010). Coen’s is the first Italian ensemble to release an album for Tzadik, which over the years has become an important point of reference for contemporary Jazz, in the “Radical Jewish Culture” series that John Zorn dedicated to the best expressions of Jewish Music at the international level. Of Gabriele Coen and his project, John Zorn wrote: “Gabriele Coen is one of the most exciting composers and performers, able to combine a profound knowledge of and sincere respect for tradition with exceptional capacity for intuitive communication and imaginative sensibility. [He is] avant-garde and at the same time firmly rooted in tradition; the “Jewish Experience” project expresses passion, integrity and impeccable interpretational art.” Awakening participated in the most important Jazz events in Italy as well as in New York at a special event at The Stone, Zorn’s nightclub, where the most important members of the American and International musical avant-garde perform regularly.
Meanwhile, Gabriele continued his concert and performance activities with his “Piccola Banda Ikona” (Saletti, Eramo Rivera) and began his collaboration with Giovanni Palombo, Benny Penazzi and Andrea Piccioni in the “Camera Ensemble” project with which he released the album of the same name under the Helikonia label (2010). He also collaborated with numerous other performers, among whom Elisabetta Antonini and Alessandro Gwis. He continued his theater collaborations with Mariangela Melato and Michele Placido in “Odio e Amo. Spoon River” (2008), with Dino and Filippo Gentili in “Scintille,” based on the novel of the same name by Gad Lerner (2010), with Stefano Cioffi in “Queste mani vengono con me,” starring Ennio Fantastichini (2010) and “La Torta in Cielo” with Galatea Ranzi (2012).
Coen’s latest album “Yiddish Melodies in Jazz, “was released in January 2013 for John Zorn’s record label, Tzadik, once again for the “Radical Jewish Culture” series.
Two years after joining John Zorn’s prestigious New York label, Gabriele Coen presents his new album for Tzadik as part of the “Radical Jewish Culture” series that John Zorn dedicated to the best expressions of new Jewish Music at the international level.

In Yiddish Melodies in Jazz, Coen (soprano and tenor sax and clarinet) leads his ensemble (Pietro Lussi, piano; Lutte Berg, electric guitar; Marco Loddo, bass; Luca Caponi, drums) to the heart of the relationship between Jewish music and American Jazz, exploring the influence of Jewish heritage on jazz, through a personal interpretation of works that have become veritable standards of the jazz tradition.

In the United States, the debt of Jewish music to Jazz is well-accepted and broadly recognized. Jewish music got new energy from Jazz, and this has translated over the years into a type of music that joins the Jewish sound with the new frontiers in sound offered by Jazz and other musical cultures.
Gabriele Coen leads us now in the discovery of the penetration of the Jewish sound into the American mainstream, presenting for the first time a contemporary take on a handful of pieces from the Klezmer repertoire and from the Yiddish musical tradition that eventually became full-fledged components of the Jazz tradition, in memorable performances by Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, Shelly Manne, Terry Gibbs, and Herbie Mann.

With the expressive eclecticism that is the distinctive sign of an artistic and intellectual journey, Gabriele Coen presents these works, along with two original compositions, creating an exciting, unusual, lyrical musical experience through a fabric that touches on Jazz, Rock, and World Music without forgetting the Jewish roots of his inspiration.

Lavelle McKinnie Duggan is an American Jazz, Soul and Gospel singer.
Born in Kankakee, near Chicago, in a musical family. Her father played the guitar in Nat King Cole's band, her mother was a dancer and singer in the Cotton Club. Lavelle already sung gospel in choirs at the tender age of 3. She started studying the piano at 5. She entered Chicago's national Conservatory at the age of 11, being the youngest student. She did brilliant musical studies, earning many awards. She sung Haendel's Messiah as she was only 14. She continued her studies at the prestigious Julliard School of Music de New York.
After a career as a lyric singer, she progressively went back to jazz and gospel. She made an appearance in the Broadway musical “Hello Dolly”. She then toured across America, singing with the greatest names in soul music such as Ray Charles or Sammy Davis Jr. She also worked with the big bands of Lionel Hampton, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson and Quincy Jones.

In 1977, she moved to France, releasing her first album Winter's Mind. She then released a disco single entitled Playgirl in 1979, followed by a second LP, the soul / funk oriented “Brand New Start.”.

In 1989, she did background vocals for Ray Charles & Dee Dee Bridgewater. The following year, she recorded and produced the album Straight Singin' - Tribute to Nat King Cole. Apart form her own concert and tours, she ran singing masterclasses, sharing her passion and contributing to the creation of many gospel choirs in France. In 1992, she was awarded the decoration of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres

During the 90s, she was the female vocalist of the B-one project. She probably did all vocals for Miranda from 1999-2001. She also sung for some TV ads.

She then left France to settle in Saint-Cergue (Switzerland). She leads a gospel choir in Geneva, but also keeps on running masterclasses and touring in France.

Top-notch French (and a few expats) studio musicians, all with extensive jazz pedigrees (several of them – Gimenez, Bonfils, Bessot … -were members of the jazz-fusion band Synthesis in the late 70s). Jean Pierre Sabar was a long-time arranger for Serge Gainsbourg. Interesting also to see the name of Noah Howard – another long time French resident – in the credits! Que du beau monde!

Recorded at Studio Bohus, Kungalv on July 26-27, 2000.
Label: Dragon Records
Bassist Kjell Jansson is a very interesting songwriter for, although his writing is fresh and not derivative, he composes mostly in the hard bop idiom. His quartet on True Swede features tenor saxophonist Gilbert Holmstrom (who sometimes hints at early John Coltrane), the Thelonious Monk-inspired pianist Tommy Kotter, and drummer Rune Carlsson. The music ranges from a Monk tribute and a Swedish folk song ("Svensk Folkvisa") to features for the individual players. Although the musicians are not highly individual or innovative, they are creative within the older style and always swing, even on the occasionally melancholy ballads. Kjell Jansson is a Swedish songwriter and musician whose music is well worth exploring by fans of straight-ahead jazz.

It’s been some years since the first Karl Hector release, and it’s known now that Mr. Hector is indeed the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, ne Jan Weissenfeldt. Whitefield is the visionary behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, the ensembles whose rough analog sound and return to the funk archetypes of the late 60s to early 70s paved the way for labels like Daptone, Truth & Soul, Timmion.
Following their deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk on the Unstraight Ahead album, Karl Hector & The Malcouns combine the previously available only on vinyl tracks from four EP’s – Tamanrasset, Ngugna Yeti Fofa, Coomassi and their latest, Ka Rica Tar – into an album as Krautrock as Afro Beat, as Multi-Culti-Psychedelic as Deep Funk. Can’t Stand The Pressure is available as a CD that contains the entirety of Ka Rica Tar, and all of the other EP tracks that haven’t come out on CD.

Whether referring to the lesser-known repertoire to which she’s drawn or to the singer herself, nurtured in the concrete jungle of her native Philadelphia, Wildflower is the ideal title for Pascale’s captivating new album. Supported by an excellent band led by the session’s producer, pianist Orrin Evans, and a host of special guests including Christian McBride, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gregoire Maret, Bilal, and Cyrus Chestnut, Pascale finally comes into full bloom, a wildflower whose beauty is emerging into the sunlight.
Propelled by the deep, sinuous groove laid down by Evans, McBride, and drummer Donald Edwards, “Forget Me” immediately establishes that connection via Pascale’s intimate, impassioned delivery. It’s followed by the tender J.J. Johnson ballad “Lament,” featuring an original lyric penned for Pascale by Tony Haywood, which features Edwards and bassist Luques Curtis. Most of the album features bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Obed Calvaire, who luxuriate in creating space while maintaining momentum on tracks like “I Remember You” and “Stay With Me.”

I’ve always wondered what the convention is for naming a jazz album. Is it about representing a mood, perhaps, or a memory triggered during the writing, or the location of the recording. It must be even more challenging when there are few if any lyrics.
In the case of Frank Woeste’s debut recording for the ACT label - Pocket Rhapsody - this German pianist seems to want accuracy. Before I listened to this album I looked up the meaning of rhapsody on Wikipedia: “episodic yet integrated, free-flowing in structure, featuring a range of highly contrasted moods, colour and tonality.”
Damn, if he hasn’t just hit the title nail on the head. Pocket Rhapsody contains most if not all of those elements over its ten tracks and it’s all the better for it. He’s clearly not content to cut off similar two-by-four shaped jazz planks to build this album. Incorporating nu-jazz, funk, free improvisation, classical and drum ’n’ bass, boring it ain’t. And, it fits in one’s pocket, too.
First track Terlingus is a slow-tempo funk, book-ended by the moodiest of dischordant sounds on the piano before the keyboard bass line pumps in backed by some rat-a-tat high-hat playing by drummer Justin Brown. The main piano theme by Woeste is simple but catchy, but then stretches out when embellished on the Hammond organ and through direct plucking of the piano strings.
Following the title description, second track Moving Light is a 90-degree turn: jauntier, Major in feel, recalling perhaps a little of the Snarky Puppy recipe with strong brass sounds over bass synth and keyboards. A pleasingly accessible tune, it’s still got a sufficiently knife-edge quality to ensure the listener isn’t too comfortable.
This album’s a bit like visiting a department store. Each floor, or track, offers a disparate range of items on offer. Up on the third floor, The Star Gazer is all plucked strings and moody, breathy lyrics from ACT stable-mate Youn Sun Nah. Avant grade and full of singer-songwriter emotion before moving into some deliciously syrupy piano improvisation, by now the listener starts to understand that West’s really sticking to the album title’s theme.
Best track on the album is the fourth cut, Buzz Addict, introduced by a simple four-chord sequence on the Hammond organ which seems to pay homage to Samuel Morse’s nineteenth-century code before more conventional piano tones and drumming solos enter the picture, along with intriguing accompaniment from Ben Monder’s guitar. It has a slightly space-adventure sort of feel, reflecting a tremendously exciting journey around the musical cosmos.
The rest of the album is like this - surprises around every corner. Like the way in which motorways are designed with gentle curves to stop drivers falling asleep, the variety in the track listing ensures the listener can’t take his or her eye off the musical road. The most interesting mood is on track eight Nouakchott, on which trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf provides a defiantly arabic sound palette that draws the reader’s mind to visions of sand dunes, wadis and the hubbub of the souk, on a track written on trips to the region by Woeste funded by the Goethe Institut.
This is a fine album with a defiantly idiosyncratic sound. It doesn’t sound like anyone else out there at the moment and Woeste has provided us with an album that won’t necessarily be satisfied with being listed solely under jazz. It’s more than that.
The whole album is packaged in one of the most beautifully simple covers I’ve seen for many a while, a colourful image by artist Terry Winters against a pure white background. It is very pleasing, as is the music inside.

Pianist and organist Floyd Morris (d. 1988, age 62) spent most of his time enlivening rhythm-and-blues recording sessions in his native Chicago and had a very limited career as a solo artist, waxing half a dozen singles and the album The ConSoul of Floyd Morris (Select, 1965) between 1964 and 1972.
In the early '50s Morris appeared with a group known as the Four Shades of Rhythm at the Bar-O-Music in Chicago for several years but apparently did not record with them. He moved on to join bassist Johnny Pate's trio and then vocalist Oscar Brown, Jr. Morris settled in at Chicago's studios backing artists like Gene Chandler, The Impressions and Etta James.
That brings us to The ConSoul of Floyd Morris, a fine helping of organ instrumental R&B that also features the sax of Buddy Lucas, another veteran of the studio scene. Lucas had played on hits such Why Do Fools Fall in Love by The Teenagers and Tears on My Pillow by Little Anthony and the Imperials.

Leave it to those soul-loving Brits to unearth some of the finest previously unreleased on CD music from the matriarch of the blues. These two dozen selections cover a large swath of years, from 1962 through 1976, but the majority are from Etta James' prime period in the mid- to late '60s. While the song quality varies from prime to pedestrian, James always delivers the vocal goods, sounding committed and driven on even the more forgettable tracks. The compilers dig into James' Chess catalog to find singles, B-sides, and album cuts, many from releases that never found their way onto CD, to cobble together a pretty terrific sampler, albeit one geared toward fans who already own James' popular material. Some selections such as James' FAME-recorded version of Willie Dixon's "Fire" aren't all that tough to find, but there are plenty of true rarities here that will delight any soul/blues music fan of this era. One such is 1962's "Street of Tears," a lost B-side that's as good, if not better, than some of the available tunes from that time. Four selections from 1970's Etta James Sings Funk album that never managed a digital-era release also appear, as does the disc's earliest recorded tune, 1962's "Let Me Know." The latter, a gem of a performance hindered by schlocky background singers and sappy strings common to that time period, nevertheless features a knockout James vocal. Two tracks from another album lost to the CD era, 1970's Losers Weepers, lead off the set and can easily be included on any compilation of James' finest performances, instead of being relegated to this set of hidden gems. The 24-page book includes comprehensive and copious liner notes printed on thick paper stock, rare color pictures of the singles, and the kind of attention to detail that is seldom found on U.S. releases anymore, making this an essential addition to any Etta James lover's collection.

10. Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me & Ko-Ko (7:02)

This is a classic album which has fortunately been reissued on CD by Ken Poston's Modern Concepts label (and later by Sea Breeze). Talbert, best-known at the time as a freelance arranger who had worked for Stan Kenton, recorded three separate sessions devoted to reworkings of originals by Fats Waller, Bix Beiderbecke, and Duke Ellington; in addition he performed his own "Green Night & Orange Bright." These fresh charts cast new light on such songs as "In a Mist," "Prelude to a Kiss," and "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now" and feature such lyrical soloists as trumpeter Joe Wilder, trombonists Eddie Bert and Jimmy Cleveland, and altoist Herb Geller. The colorful ensembles in particular make this a memorable set.

Defying boundaries, those which state that there is a corner represented by Wynton Marsalis and an opposite corner in which Nate Wooley has marked his own name, the Nate Wooley Quintet presents us with an unexpected CD of the leader’s own versions of Marsalis’s music.
Unexpected for some, but not for Wooley: after all, the American trumpeter became interested in jazz because of the Wynton Marsalis recordings he heard while forging his first steps in music. Without any aesthetic, political, or ironic baggage, Nate Wooley just felt that it was time to show why he loves albums like “Black Codes”, “J Mood” and “Wynton Marsalis”, while translating it to his unique style. His concept is clear from the liner notes to this recording, while the passion and joy in this music is clear from the recording itself. The leader here is at a point in which he senses that jazz – more than experimental and free improvised music – is once again bringing him «to new and increasingly intellectual paths». The results are astonishing, in what we hear and in what “(Dance to) the Early Music” represents, making us expect much more in the future of this personal rediscovery.

Michel Benita’s Ethics band is international, and the Algiers-born bassist leads a line-up comprised of a flugelhornist from Fribourg, Switzerland, a koto player from Tokyo, a guitarist from Drøbak, Norway, and a French drummer who once lived in Turkey as a member of the Istanbul Symphony.
The group’s music, correspondingly, flows – like the glistening river of the title – beyond borders. Alongside his own compositions and a piece by Mieko Miyazaki, Benita includes a tune from Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell and one from Norwegian composer and organist Eyvind Alnæs (1872-1932). A strongly lyrical tendency prevails, Mathieu Michel’s graceful flugelhorn foregrounded, with koto, bass and drums interacting creatively at the band’s core.Colours of folk and colours of jazz are blended in Michel Benita’s writing, multi-idiomatic in a very natural way. Eivind Aarset’s guitars and what Benita calls “organic electronics” gently envelop the music. The whole sound-picture is finely-realized in the responsive acoustics of the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano, where ‘River Silver’ was recorded in April 2015, with Manfred Eicher producing.

Benita favours long-term musical associations. Ethics has existed for five years already, with unchanged personnel and the players in the group have also collaborated in other contexts. Michel Benita and Eivind Aarset work regularly together in Andy Sheppard’s Quartet on the critically-acclaimed album ‘Surrounded By Sea’ and the guitarist is also a member of a quintet led by Matthieu Michel. Matthieu has also worked with Michel Benita in bands large and small, while Benita and drummer Philippe Garcia have also often worked in tandem, and appear together on recordings of, for instance, trumpeter Erik Truffaz.

Personnel: Ingrid Jensen (trumpet, flugelhorn); Steve Wilson (soprano & alto saxophones); George Garzone (tenor saxophone); Bruce Barth (piano); Larry Grenadier (bass); Lenny White (drums).
Although trumpeter Ingrid Jensen has a wide range and a potentially fiery style, she holds a great deal in reserve on her debut recording, letting one peek at her emotional intensity now and then but mostly making lyrical statements. Her supporting cast (altoist Steve Wilson, George Garzone on tenor, pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Lenny White) is quite impressive and adds a great deal to the CD without taking the spotlight away from the leader. Ingrid Jensen sounds particularly strong on "Marsh Blues" and the standards "Ev'rytime We Say Goodbye," "I Love You," and an ironic "By Myself," but all nine selections have their moments. The music is basically advanced hard bop, with Jensen (when she is playing open) sounding like a logical successor to Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw while resembling her teacher, Art Farmer, a bit when utilizing a mute. This is an impressive beginning to what should be an important career.
