Southern California saxophonist, arranger, composer Steve Torok has performed with Stevie Wonder, Usher, The Temptations, Four Tops, Sheila E, O'Jays, Brian Bromberg, Pete Escovedo, Dan Siegel, Taj Mahal, and many others. His saxophone playing or arrangements have been featured on numerous national recordings including the hit TV shows The Voice and American Idol. Notable jazz artists including funky trombonist Fred Wesley, saxophonists Ernie Watts, Tom Scott, vocalist Carmen Bradford, and klezmer violinist Yale Strom have performed his arrangements.
Eye to Eye, co-produced by Dan Siegel, represents an eclectic array of Steve’s works: original tunes, arrangements of standards, jazz arrangements of Star Wars music (created for Lucasfilm, Ltd. and premiered at Star Wars Celebration III), and music with elephant percussion. See below for a note from Steve regarding both the Star Wars and Elephant music. The recording features some of the best Los Angeles studio musicians.

Sobriquet and appearance aren’t likely to endear Sax Gordon to the jazz intelligentsia any time soon. Neither is his obvious acumen for creative facial grooming. Even so, In the Wee Small Hours is an aural book that belies the questionability of its cover with a program of proficient, if derivative, organ combo jazz. The instrumentation is identical and the vibe very similar to Stanley Turrentine’s 1961 classic Dearly Beloved for Blue Note. Sax Gordon may not exactly look the part, but on strictly auricular terms he’s earned convincing credibility as a journeyman worth noting.

A mysterious work of electric guitar & bass, signal processing, field recordings and voice. Using tonal textures and unusual punctuation, Geisse builds intense and encompassing sound spaces that use spatial actions to great effect, with sparse delivery of recordings and other interventions. Impressive work, paced for the benefit of his rich sonic world, creating a surprisingly psychedelic side-effect. Gunnar Geisse has worked with Phil Durrant, Barry Guy,Franz Hautzinger,Wilbert de Joode,Jason Kahn, Thomas Lehn,Gunter Muller,Phill Niblock,Evan Parker,&c.&c.

Recorde July 28, 1942. Tr. 11 - recorded January 27, 1941.
Circle Records presents a series of Lang-Worth Transcriptions by Charlie Barnet and his Orchestra, most of which were recorded in New York's Liederkranz Hall on July 28, 1942; "Charleston Alley," using an arrangement by Horace Henderson, was committed to wax on January 27, 1941. Only six of the 14 tracks feature vocals; the singers are Lena Horne, Huck Andrews, Bob Carroll, Frances Wayne and Peanuts Holland. Instrumental treats include "Victory Walk," "Wichita Windstorm," "Washington Whirligig" and a beautifully rendered salute to Johnny Hodges and Duke Ellington in the form of "Things Ain't What They Used to Be." Listeners are advised to savor the trumpeting of Peanuts Holland and the soprano, alto and tenor saxophones of Charlie Barnet. This excellent package of big-band swing recorded in the middle of the Second World War contains at least as much real jazz as any of the six Classics chronological Barnet compilations documenting the years 1933-1940.

The Norwegian jazz scene is like the hat of a magician: when you think nothing more can get out from its mysterious hole, there’s something else emerging to amaze us. SNIK is such a case. The compositions are from two of the members of this quartet, trombonist Kristoffer Kompen and double bassist Ole Morten Vagan. Vagan is one of the most respected names of the Scandinavian jazz, with his membership of Joshua Redman Trio and his quintet Motif, writing scores for the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra or playing with the likes of Axel Dorner, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Bugge Wesseltoft and Rudi Mahall. Kompen became a member of the big band Jazzin’ Babies when he was only 15 years old and since then it seems that the sky is the only limit for him. He’s the founding leader of the bands Union Rhythm Kings and Kompen Quintet and the author of “Tribute to Jack Teagarden”, maybe the most important link between the trombone practices of today and the times of the so-called “father of jazz trombone”. What a combination! Together with Kristoffer Berre Alberts and Erik Nylander they show us that it’s not possible to play cold jazz, even when surrounded by snow and ice. “Metasediment Rock” is to the sensible hearts what volcanos are to close-by villages: dangerous.

Record Label: Clean Feed Records
Projections captures an improvised duo encounter between émigré Russian pianist Simon Nabatov and Californian bassist Mark Dresser. Although they first played together as part of German composer Klaus Konig's Orchestra in 1992, it's taken until now for their first head to head. Both are masters of their respective instruments, articulate, persuasive and responsive. They come together in a busy, volatile set recorded live in 2014 at the Loft in Nabatov's adopted hometown of Cologne. The result is a dazzling series of interactions which can change within the space of a few seconds from warm and tender to austere and alien.

Dresser commands a range of tone and texture unmatched by any of his peers except perhaps Barry Guy, manifest in rapid-fire switches between bow and fingers and between registers from delicate koto like plucks to a growling bottom end. Slurred vocal inflections vie with pure toned classical lines as he roams freely across the fretboard. His partnership with self styled hyper pianist Denman Maroney leads one to ask whether the bassist gravitates towards those who modify their piano for alternative sounds, or does he attract them?

Certainly on this session Nabatov majors on piano preparations in contrast to some of his other dates (such as his garrulous duets with trombonist Nils Wogram). Gambits such as rolling balls on the strings add a random element, while he dampens the hammers elsewhere to extract gamelan sonorities. There's no respite to his imagination on the keyboard, where the torrent of notes emanating from each hand suggests he almost has too much to say.

Happy synchronicities mean that two such voices in full spate create much more than the sum of their parts With no melody or regular time, the music is percussive rather than rhythmic—the prancing staccato section in "Pliant Giant" provides a case in point. But episodes of spare reflection appear interspersed through the program, as in "Cîtara XL" where the unconventional jostles with the more expected.

Dresser's introduction to "Aria Attack" includes whistling arco wails and groans, building up to an intense exchange. But a restless energy dictates that no matter what they move on quickly to new ideas (as in the Morse code passage in jerky explosive "Parting Shots") an indication perhaps that much remains for this pairing to investigate.

10. You (2:49)
11. The Ballad of Thelonious Monk (3:07)
"Someday You'll come along, the man I love." With this little textual feint opens Louise Bøttern his debut album with the known Gershwin song. Ruse is to Ella, Billie and the other song, "Someday He'll come along, the man I love." Bøttern twister text and turns it against a specific person. So much for respect for the old standards. For respect for the original, it has Louise Bøttern. But she is also a mature debutant (born in 1975) who knows what she wants with the great American songbook. Along with the important cooperation partner, pianist Catrine Frølund has an elegant Scandinavian touch on the piano, has Bøttern made a vocal jazz album is technically well done. She also backed up by Kasper Vadsholdt on bass, Mikkel Find on drums and Jan Harbeck on sax and clarinet.

It takes a lot to get a place among the other Danish singers who also sings jazz standards. Here Bøttern missing anything yet, in spite of the fact that she chooses some minor worn standards. I miss a little more edge. Okay it's a reviewer cliché. But if there must be room for Louise Bøttern, she must step forward and show something more personality. It is not unlikely that she has it. Perhaps it out at the venues - the plate is not right.

Personnel: Jimmy Woode - bass, vocals (2); Mike Simpson – flute; Clark Terry – trumpet; Britt Woodman – trombone; Porter Kilbert - alto saxophone; Paul Gonsalves - tenor saxophone; Ramsey Lewis – piano; Sam Woodyard - drums
Jimmy Woode is best known for his extensive work as a sideman, so this rare opportunity to record as a leader, which first appeared as an Argo LP in 1958, is a welcome look into his abilities as a composer and arranger as well. Recruiting several fellow sidemen from Duke Ellington's band, including Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, and Sam Woodyard, along with pianist Ramsey Lewis and the lesser known Porter Kilbert (alto sax) and flutist Mike Simpson, Woode composed five originals for the date. The breezy blues "Foofy for President" has a spirited exchange between Terry and Simpson. "The Man from Potter's Cottage" is a sauntering blues that is dedicated to Woodyard, the leader's roommate while touring with Ellington. "The Dance of the Reluctant Drag" is a challenging piece, with odd twists both harmonically and rhythmically. Finally, Woode adds a warm vocal to the one standard, "The Way You Look Tonight." Long out of print, this enjoyable album was finally reissued in Japan by Universal, though with no bonus tracks, resulting in a brief session of under 28 minutes.

Personnel: Fred Hersch: piano
Record Label: Palmetto Records
When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are currently two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else.

A statement such as that might spur the jazz cognoscenti to ready the pitchforks and torches, but that threat doesn't make that claim any less true. Keith Jarrett may surpass all in his ability to pull completely improvised music out of thin air, Brad Mehldau's brilliance certainly shines through when he weaves his two hands in different directions and reconfigures the harmony and melody of a song, and countless others impress with wit, athleticism, range, sophistication, and/or emotional complexity. But at the end of the day, there's simply no pianist who does a better job of connecting through and with a piece of music than Fred Hersch.

Hersch manages to create a magical bond with listeners, as this writer has observed first-hand on more than one occasion, and part of his ability to do so is likely linked to the way he balances the sounds of inevitability and surprise in his performances. His every note, chord, and gesture, be they composed or improvised, comes off as if there was no other way they could or should exist. Yet, at the same time, his pathways are never predictable. On this album, recorded live at a church in the Catskills in the summer of 2014, the best example of that paradoxical performing ability comes in the form of "Caravan." Everything is in its right place there, but Hersch is the one dictating what those right places are. Notes seem to beam off in different directions as Hersch works a somewhat pointillistic angle. It's an adventurous performance that still sounds destined to exist just as it is.

Across the six other tracks, Hersch manages to impress in different ways. "Olha Maria/O Grande Amor" is a study on grace and movement, "Pastorale (For Robert Schumann)" comes off as a masterclass in refinement and taste, and "The Song Is You" is pure beauty unfolding. Those who pigeonhole Hersch as a purely gentle pianistic soul will be rendered mute by "Whirl (For Suzanne Farrell)" and an incredibly expansive and firm-handed take on Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud." But that's not to say that Hersch doesn't deliver heartfelt material: his album-ending meditation on Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" is simply breathtaking.

The large majority of this material has appeared elsewhere in Hersch's discography, be it in trio form or on a different solo outing, but this isn't more of the same. As good as some of those performances might be—and they are very good—these performances are second to none.

It's a pity how few artists who truly deserve it make it big. Unfortunately, many big voiced, big talent names fly under the radar and commercially fail when they are compared to names who don't have the talent, but have the right producers. Divine Brown is one of those unfortunate artists who deserve so much more credit than they actually get. Brown's self titled debut album is a gorgeous display of talent. She's a great vocalist with a magical eight octave-range, who dazzles her audience with a mystical talent that captivates. The music on the album is just amazing. Brown is the epitome of doo wop soul, with a solid fusion of musical genius weaved into soulful beats and magical grooves. Her first single, "Old Skool Love," dazzles the listener with incredible tunes and sizzling vocals and terrific songwriting skills. After that, listeners enjoy a great array of soul samples, such as "U Shook Me," "Twist My Hair," and "Something 'Bout You." There is a small flaw, however. Brown makes this album her own with her great doo wop sound, but after so many tracks, the music starts to feel old-fashioned and repetitive. After several songs, the music is pleasantly different, but forgettable. Brown's voice carries the album at the end. Right at the end, "Warrior" brings it all home in sheer musical beauty that envelops the listener is bliss. The beginning is terrific, the end is strong, and the middle is a mild creative misstep, but Divine Brown is a strong showing from a true talent, who with a stronger team of songwriters and producers, could be immensely successful. This album shows mounds of potential, and Brown deserves to be a household name with her stunning voice. Let's see where this girl goes, hopefully it's up.
