Pat Halcox was the trumpet player in Chris Barber's band for 54 years. That alone produced the longest serving partnership in Jazz anywhere in the world. A self-effacing man whose playing was described as "fiery, creative and with an impressive range". Quite simply he was one of the finest Jazz trumpeters the UK has ever produced.

The first CD in this double CD collection takes a few tracks from each decade with Chris Barber's band. Making appearances are Ottilie Patterson, Lonnie Donegan, Kenny Ball and Alex Welsh.

The second CD has tracks of Pat with other musicians and bands including leading American pianists Art Hodes and Don Ewell. There are also tracks by Pat's own All Stars. All the tracks are previously unreleased.

For 74 years the Melody Maker was the weekly 'trade paper' for the dance band and jazz musician as well as all those interested in the modern music scene. One of it's continuing features and talking points were the annual Readers Polls where readers voted under different categories for individual musicians, singers, big bands and a host of other categories. Esquire Records used these poll results to form and record hand picked modern jazz groups. Esquire recorded the Melody Maker All Stars as they were called, from 1951 until 1955. The first "Waxin' the Winners" record was a success and with the close co-operation of the Melody Maker editor Pat Brand the records became an annual event.

The second recording of the All Stars took place on March 24th, 1952, and included as many winners as possible from the 1951 poll results. Joe Muddel displaced Charlie Short in the bass section but otherwise the results were virtually the same as the previous year except that for some reason there was no baritone or soprano sax section in the poll. This time winners Kenny Baker, Sid Phillips and Jackie Armstrong were unavailable and were replaced by Jimmy Deuchar (4th), Vic Ash (3rd) and Keith Christie (2nd). Enough was recorded on this session to be issued as the first Esquire 10" LP (20-001). Jack Parnell's new band leapt to second place, just behind Ted Heath, in the swing band section and Parnell himself again won the drummer section.

From Brian Davis' sleeve notes to Esq S321: Late 1952 - early 1953, the new Parnell band continues it's rise to stardom; the now ledgendary Thursday night broadcasts of the Kenny Baker Dozen; the debut of the equally legendary Ronnie Scott nine piece outfit; the BBC Showband and it's featured soloists - all this wind of change contributed to to some exciting musical chairs in the 1953 MM Poll.
Jack Parnell won the coveted 'Musician of the Year' award as well as his usual drummer spot. From the Heath band new winners were Johnny Hawksworth and Reg Owen 'Arranger of the Year' while from Kenny Baker's Dozen, new winners were Bill McGuffie and Martin Slavin while Kenny again won the trumpet vote. Harry Klein, Kenny's baritone player won the re-instated baritone section. Ronnie Chamberlain won the re-instated soprano section. For this third recording, of the 1952 Poll winners on March 4th, 1953 there was only one dep - Les Gilbert replacing John Dankworth who was touring in Germany.

In the spirit of the Meters and Booker T and the MG’s comes COMANGO!, the debut long-player from Jim Viner’s Incredible B3 Band. Comprising veterans of session work and touring acts, the B3 Band trades in the sonics of mid-’60s Memphis, offering here 11 delightful numbers that fill the gap between the dance-floor mover “Chicken Tickin” and the lovely, delicate jazz-fest homage “Saint-Paul.”

Drummer/composer Jim Viner is fronting his own outfit for the first time. A member of The Diplomats of Solid Sound, Brother Trucker, High and Lonesome and Head Candy, Jim has played on stage and in the studio with such artists as Andre Williams, Pieta Brown and Kevin Gordon. His compositions and playing can be heard on myriad film and television soundtracks, including Lionsgate’s “Madea’s Big Happy Family” and Showtime’s hit series “Weeds.” Taking the melodic leads are Hammond B-3 players Nate Basinger and Radoslav Lorkovic, who enjoy empathetic backing by guitarists Mike Fitzpatrick and Doug Roberson, saxophonist Eddie McKinley and percussionist Paul Cunliffe.

Like the Dickens classic itself, Alan Barnes's "Christmas Carol" has something for everyone.A family night out that is also a treat for the jazz connoisseur; it will delight anyone who loves music or literature – or just Christmas!

This new suite of pieces, touring for the first time this year, takes the audience through the characters and scenes of "A Christmas Carol". Readings from the original Dickens tell the story, and after each scene eight virtuoso musicians bring the characters and scenes to life, switching audiences from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself!A gruff baritone sax plays Scrooge, his lost love Belle is a lyrical alto, his clerk Bob Cratchit a cheery clarinet and Marley’s Ghost walks in the person of a swinging trombone. Just as Scrooge’s ghosts take him on a tour of his life, so the movements of this suite seemed each to have a benevolent presiding ghost, celebrating the spirit of jazz greats past and present. The music and readings inspire the full range of Dickens’s imagination and emotion: from terror and remorse through to love and then irresistible joy: "God Bless Us Every One!"Barnes is a true Dickensian. He is a serious reader of the novels. It is a clear blunder of providence that he was born too late to appear in their pages!”Hot News.

Had this CD been received in 2008, it would surely have made my personal top-ten list. Canadian reed man Quinsin Nachoff aligns with French modern jazz artists, including the co-leader and drummer Bruno Tocanne. Sans a bassist, the four-man horns section generates an excitable string of musical notions, sparked with adventurous shifts in strategy. As Tocanne's resonating drum parts generate a heavy and vibrant bottom end.

Featuring beefy pulses, swaggering grooves and pause/restart type charts, the quintet delves into complex unison phrasings amid brisk soloing breakouts. Powerful, yet pliant, the hornists enjoy equal ground while soaring skyward via an aggressive methodology that yields the proverbial knockout blow. In a sense, they play tricks with neural networks while occasionally tempering the gala with soft voicings and modern classical environs, abetted by Nachoff's sublime clarinet work on "Goodbye Lullaby."

One of the more captivating highlights of many can be heard on "Cascade," where trumpeter Frederic Roudet solos in linear fashions within his band-mates swirling arrangements. Think of jagged lines intersecting a rotating circle. Hence, the band paints lucid portraitures of sound, contrasted with gobs of emotive attributes. And in other regions of the album, the musicians flirt with the free realm while skyrocketing into the ozone during the peppery jazz-rock groove titled "QL."

This is the type of product that progressive-jazz aficionados should welcome with open arms and attentive ears as the core foundation attains a near flawless coexistence with the improvisational element. Sparks are flying everywhere! It's a magnificent showcase that imparts a lasting impression.

Recorded July, 1966 at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club.
The first in the Harkit label's series of archival live recordings from the famed London jazz club Ronnie Scott's captures the remarkable Blossom Dearie in July 1966. Backed by the house rhythm section of bassist Freddy Logan and drummer Allan Ganley, Dearie is the very essence of sophistication and effortless cool. Herself a London resident at this point in her career, the singer articulates the city's candy-colored mod culture with knowing precision. Assimilating the sound and sensibility of post-Beatlemania pop with an ease greater than any other jazz singer of her generation, Dearie's girlish yet intimate vocals perfectly capture the sensual innocence of a society poised on the brink of sexual revolution. And of course, her repertoire is hipper than thou, embracing everything from "One Note Samba" to "Peel Me a Grape." A stellar performance, complete with superior sound and extensive liner notes.

New Beginnings, is Gail Jhonson's 5th solo project on Philly the Kid Records. With the loss of her son, her daughter off to Berklee College of Music, an unexpected surgery; Gail found out quick, that things were changing in her life, and time for a new beginning. She started writing new grooves, melodies and partnered with Chuck Jefferson to begin a new musical journey, from where they left off; 2011 release of HerStory.
She leads the all star female ensemble, Jazz in Pink, and produced their debut cd, 1st Collection in 2014. So, 2015 began a new chapter for self expression; thus New Beginnings sounded like a good title.
New Beginnings CD features an array of talented musicians; along with Marion Meadows, Hamilton Hardin and co-producer/saxophonist Mike Parlett (Solar Radio). This Cd has high energy tracks, and sure to be a chart buster, especially the 1st single release, "Uptown Philly"! It includes an awesome arrangement of the Beatles classic, "And I Love Her", featuring Rob McDonald on vocals. Jimmy Haslip plays a beautiful duet, on "Vibe", while Maia sets the mood. To Tamina, was inspired by 20 year old Berklee drummer Jacori "Tay" Robinson, whose producer skills also shine on Hands Up; written by Chuck Jefferson. Gail, the 1st Lady of Smooth Jazz- produced, played, engineered, sang; and is off on a new horizon with this one. Since she began in the music business, Gail Jhonson has always been a woman with high expectations and continuously on the move. With 2015 destined to be her best year yet, she began to invest more time in developing an overall brand strategy. Her new strategy will focus on building of her brand to include more opportunities in music, movies, music production and other entertainment vertical markets.
Gail is the recipient of a 2009, Grammy® Award nod for Pearls CD and two Black Women In Jazz Awards 2014 and scored for the 2015 DVD movie release of If Not For His Grace. She directs the band for Hands For Hope, Starlight Jazz Benefit Concert annually. 2015 Gail is music director for the music THE WIZ, Common Ground Theatre, San Diego.

Otto Bredl (29 November 1928, München - July 1985, Köln) is a German jazz trombonist whose steady presence on the European music scene began in the years immediately following the end of the second World War. His horn playing, enthusiastic and juicy to a near-slobbering point, was an atmospheric feature of many American clubs that sprung up in Munich during this period. Between 1948 and the mid '80s, Bredl appeared on at least 100 recordings, including a series of collaborations between European big bands and visiting American jazz stars. The sight of Bredl in a brass section was a sign of quality, sure to extend to the other trombonists flanking him -- great players such as his frequent associate Jiggs Whigham, or the flashy Stan Kenton alumni Bobby Burgess.

Prior to discovering trombone and the music of Jack Teagarden, Bredl played an even weirder instrument, the bassoon. His early training was in the classical academy, a situation he was yanked away from by the opportunities in clubs and subsequent grander exposure over German radio. From 1949 he was steadily employed in the well-financed broadcasting studios by radio bandleaders Kurt Edelhagen and Eddie Sauter. By 1961, he had become associated with the fabulous Clarke-Boland Big Band, a collaborative effort between French pianist Francy Boland and the American bebop drummer Kenny Clarke.

Bredl remained flexible as the genre he loved went through periods of adolescent angst; fusion, for example, came along in the '70s and can be directly blamed for the trombonist's involvement with projects such as the album Illusions on a Double Dimple by the group Triumvirat. Hard blowing was also required for his '70s assignment with bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer, who, it must be assumed, knew how to torture trombonists since he played the instrument himself. No reflecting on dimples here; a retrospective of this band boasts of containing Powerhouse Sounds of the '70s. Bredl, whose name sounds like something one might order in a Munich bakery, has also recorded with vocalist Sarah Vaughan, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, and the '50s pop singer Caterina Valente.
