Cold Blood - American rhythm and blues band from San Francisco, California. Provided primarily charismatically bright female vocals Lydia Pense, whose voice critics always compared with the usual voice of Janis Joplin in the manner of execution and intensity of feelings, as well as fine-sounding guitar and precisely calibrated horn section.

Many of the greatest teams in the history of rock 'n' roll settled in San Francisco and the surrounding bay. Although this city has been advanced in the psychedelic movement, unfold at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury, it developed quickly and funk. DJs, available in a choice of styles, such as Tom Doneyu (Tom Donahue), who coined the term "underground" radio and Abe "wokou" Cache (Abe "Voco" Kesh) into his nightly show diversified long jam «Dead» and «Quicksilver» patches of hip-hop, soul and jazz. Sylvester Stewart (Sylvester Stewart), aka Sly Stone (Sly Stone), was another outstanding Dee Jay Bay, record producer, and, in general, it has had influence on the development of this subculture. The trend of Latin American music was in the air San Francisco, and groups such as «Santana», «Tower of Power» and «Malo» turned to the genre of boogaloo. One of those who best knew how to combine the power and energy R & B c aesthetics of brotherhood and freedom inherent hippie was the legendary band from the Bay «Cold Blood». With the support of a pioneer in the field of management in a rock 'n roll Bill Graham (Bill Graham), she almost immediately after its formation in 1968 to win over the public. The concert hall in the area of Fillmore was the epicenter of rock of San Francisco, there was no better place to see the musicians in a relaxed state, as many shows going all night. The first 2 album, recorded at the studio of Graham "Records of San Francisco" - "Cold Blood» (Cold Blood), which was released in 1969 and produced by David Rubinson (David Rubinson), and "Sisyphus» (Sisyphus) in 1970, sound technician was working on "Santana" boats Fred (Fred Catero), -is a great statement about yourself with a group of powerful energy that can really make the audience. The success of these two albums was due to a combination of good songs, great cover versions and sensual voice of Lydia Pence (Lydia Pense), extraordinarily beautiful singers of the band.Change management and transition to the record company «Reprise Records» in 1972 led to record their third album "The first taste of sin» («First Taste of Sin»). The band, which has been around for 20 years, only a few years of touring and recording songs, and though their albums were not mass commercial success compared to some of their contemporaries, yet they had a lot of fans across the country. The group experienced some changes, the most significant of which was the withdrawal of one of its founders, guitarist Larry Field (Larry Field). Lydia Pence still heads the group. Although she had to withstand constant compared to Janis Joplin (Janis Joplin), white soul singer, standing head and shoulders above the other, a particular style of Lydia and her beauty continued to bring success.picAnother confirmation of the group is that they chose the producer of the album "The first taste of sin" budding, and eventually became the genius of soul, Donnie Hezveya (Donny Hathaway). Despite its youth, the singer and composer, born in Chicago, has received recognition for his work with Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler and «The Impressions». His reputation as the best soul of the composer of the new generation of rapidly spreading in musical circles. The company «Warner Bros» and its sister label «Reprise» in the 70 years have been a stronghold of the recording for the most solid and strong songs that are really worth to be heard. Hezvey and «Cold Blood» created a sophisticated mixture of R & B and rock, which is like the way fans of soul and prog fans. Hezvey brought in two excellent songs of the album: slow blues «You Had to Know», which became the hallmark of Lydia, and «Valdez in the Country», and along with his game reminiscent of church music on the piano and jazz playing the organ. He also invited to participate in the recording of Veterans Cove Coke and Pete Escovedo (Coke and Pete Escovedo), who played on the bongos, timpani and other exotic percussion, rhythmic sound that made the album more passionate. As for the sound of wind instruments, it has been strengthened thanks to the famous jazz tenor saxophonist and Kristibu Pete (Pete Christieb). For a long time he was a member of «Doc Severensen's Tonight Show Band» and informal possessional musician.Selecting songs by James Taylor (James Taylor), working with Warner Bros-Reprise, «Low and Behold» to create a rare cover version was a risky business, but the musicians «Cold Blood» were able to adapt it for its hard and fast rock-soul style.Group "Sold Blood» during its existence (until the collapse in 1976) recorded three more albums. In 1973 he was released the album "Thriller!» («Thriller!»), And in 1974 - "Lydia» («Lydia») - two for the Warner Bros-Reprise. The swan song of the group was the album «Lydia Pense and Cold Blood», produced by an employee of Stax Records and respected guitarist and songwriter Steve Cropper (Steve Cropper) for the recording company ABC Records. This activity of the "Sold Blood» is not over, and for a long time can talk about the contribution of this rather unusual group in the legacy of rock music. Such is their album "The first taste of sin». © Al Fichera (translated article from the booklet for the album "First Taste of Sin")

9. We'll Be Together Again

Personnel: Vincent Herring (soprano & alto saxophones); Cyrus Chestnut (piano); Jesse Yusef Murphy (bass); Billy Drummond (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion).

Altoist Vincent Herring gained his initial recognition for his ability to emulate Cannonball Adderley while a member of Nat Adderley's quintet. On this CD, a 1994 date made for the Japanese Alfa label and released for the first time in the U.S. in 1997, the emphasis is on slower tempos with just a few moments of heat (particularly Jobim's "Triste"). Pianist Cyrus Chestnut often gains one's attention with both his creative accompaniment and solos; bassist Jesse Murphy and drummer Billy Drummond are fine in support.

Herring is in worthwhile form but does not stretch himself much in this setting, playing unadventurous solos on nine very familiar standards, most of which do not need to be revived again (such as "Star Eyes," "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "We'll Be Together Again").

Formed in 1980 in Barcelona, La Vella is leading band in the Spanish jazz scene.

La Vella is a roots-based jazz band. The repertoire is based on new orleans jazz music, through swing, mainstream, blues, gospel, latin... and giving a special importance to their own musical arrangements.

The band have achieved a stunning success playing in prestigious festivals around the world and recording up to 10 albums with a record sale of 40000 copies. They have also participated in different events which are representative of the Spanish cultural live, with the aim to spread out their music throughout Spain, a country with a short jazz tradition.

Michele McCain is a New York City native known and appreciated for her extra-ordinary talent throughout the world. This multi-talented star of stage & screen [TV shows, reality TV, Film & Radio] began her career at New York's Shea Stadium in front of 60,000 people where she performed with the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.

Her Broadway debut was in the role created by the late Nell Carter in the Tony award-winning musical Ain’t Misbehavin’, music by Fat’s Waller. Immediately following North American and international tours, she premiered in German in the acclaimed and highly acrobatic production Barnum in Berlin’s Teater des Westens alongside Freddy Quinn. This appearance brought her to the Teatro Monumental in Madrid to carry the Spanish version as Joyce Heath in Emilio Aragon's Production. But this is just the beginning…

...as the curtain opened for Michele on Broadway, such a virtuosic and dynamic artist has had the privilege to share the stage with many music legends and stars throughout the world, such as the great B. B. King. Michele has been paired with jazz greats Hank Jones, Clark Terry and the internationally acclaimed jazz artist Tete Montoliu. Another highlight: Sharing the bill with Grammy award-winning blue’s man Charlie Musselwhite and his harmonica. And then there are the women. Michele has had the pleasure when taping the TV Special A Tribute to Xavier Kughart to work with the grand diva Celia Cruz and while recording the album Verde y Negro to share billing with la mas grande Rocio Jurado. With company like this, one can only grow.

Justin Time (1999)

Trumpeter Hugh Ragin made this recording in late '98 in a (mostly) quartet format featuring pianist Craig Taborn, bassist Jaribu Shahid, and drummer Bruce Cox. The tunes, all Ragin originals, range from the sauntering bluesy strut of the title track to fast bebop to free jazz, concluding with a Sun Ra-inspired avant garde accompaniment to poetry read by Amiri Baraka. His liner notes establish the suite as a celebration of life in Harlem.

Ragin obviously plays the starring role here: his total mastery of the trumpet allows him to deliver crystal clear melodies, blistering solos, and twisted screaming avant interludes without hesitation. The rest of his band, though competent, certainly does not inspire any great awe. While Ragin's emphasis on composition provides plenty of formal structure, he seems to exercise his creative powers most stunnningly in the free jazz and avant garde settings. In this end of the musical spectrum, Ragin's musical voice is unique and unparalleled.

Double Image was the intermittent project of Davids Friedman and Samuels, whose vibes and marimbas found likeminded company in session musicians Harvie Swartz and Michael DiPasqua on Dawn, the second of only three albums for the group and their only for ECM. Having two jazz percussionists in the same space was something of a rarity in the late seventies, when the album was recorded, and perhaps contributed to its being swept under the carpet over time. What we have, however, is a smooth and airy set of four extended pieces more than worthy of a reissue.

Every gesture therein is artfully considered, as demonstrated to delightful effect in the opening “Passage.” Swartz’s buttery soft bass adds girth to the FriedmanSamuels nexus, where light and darkness walk hand in hand. While DiPasqua baits a hook for every loop, vibe notes hang like keys from a chain, swinging in a steady hand with a pleasant jingle. For the final stretch, marimbas smoke from a flame of cymbals before vibes recap with a sublimely resolute chord. These plaintive measures continue in “The Next Event,” where the marimba broadens its wingspan into “Sunset Glow.” And as that honeyed bass trickles slowly back in, the shaded sound is fleshed out into a colorful fan of sunrays. Swartz beatifies the final “Crossing,” which, over a steadily popping snare, flows with calm virtuosity before breathing down the neck of finality.

This album makes a fine addition to any mallet enthusiast’s collection and proves that, even as its drowsiest, ECM quietly towers above the rest. A personal favorite among the label’s painted covers as well.

David Basse's voice texture has a nodding acquaintance with Johnny Mercer, but his delivery is strictly his own. An ability to scat is his strong suit and it is displayed at it's best on this Disc. Angela Hagenbach will simply steal your heart away. Her low sultry voice combined with a clever vocalese style is the perfect counterpoint to Basse. Bobby Watson, on Alto, provides a nice backdrop to the vocals and adds some soulful solos to the mix.
The humor, soul and hip delivery was magnificent, it was the perfect closer to a super recording.

This CLEARSOUND JAZZ-Album presents 18 jazz standards in their original form. As these songs from musicals or films became jazz favorites, the tendency to concentrate on variations on the refrain led to dropping more and more verses. When finally all these shortened songs appeared in the “Realbook”, musicians around the world could play them together, as they all had the same songbook. The disadvantage of this development was that many musicians no longer knew of the missing verses, which had made the songs richer and more colorful – in time the frequent repetition of the refrain tended to flatten the story. The refrain alone does not add depth, so one has the choice of playing more variations on the melody, or not singing at all – many jazz groups have dropped the vocals entirely. The goal of this Album is to present the whole story: the documentation of the intro, the verses, and the refrain. It would be possible to improve on the quality of the singing, but the accompaniment and production by Paul Amrod is masterful. He has been playing these songs since he was a child, and has studied and played with jazz stars Maceo Parker and Chick Corea in New York.

Noted guitarist Ray Obiedo's There Goes That (Rhythmus Records) is his first album since 1999's Modern World (Domo Records). Over his 4 decades plus career, Obeido has worked with an impressive Who's Who List of musicians including: Herbie Hancock, Bobbi Humphrey, George Duke, The Whispers, Brenda Russell, Peter Michael Escovedo, Grover Washington, Jr., The Rippingtons and Lou Rawls; along with San Francisco Bay Area favorites Tower of Power and Grammy winner Pacific Mambo Orchestra.

Band leader Obiedo has traveled and performed extensively all over the world with his distinctive East Bay Sound. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, he is particularly proud of his Richmond CA roots. For this project, he composed, arranged, recorded, mixed and edited all the tracks at his Werewolf Recording. He named it after a visiting dog-shy singer who nervously referred to his pet German Sheppard as a "werewolf" years ago. The accomplished artist has surrounded himself with old and new friends including Pete Escovedo, Sheila E, Peter Michael Escovedo, and Nicolas Bearde.

Mr. Obiedo's fluid guitar starts off the opening track "Southern Side," and David K. Mathews' keyboard work sparkles here. The horn arrangements flow and complement the song. There is a lush percussive foundation of Afro Latin polyrhythms that permeates the entire record.

The breezy vocals on "Fayola' provided by Sandy Cressman, Sandy Griffith, and Bearde float comfortably on the swinging cadence of the composition. Jeff Narell's steel pan playing contributes to the island feel of the song."Werewolf" kicks off with a strong rhythmic introduction and Kenny Garrett 's soprano sax solo gives it extra lift. The Latin syncopation also pulses throughout the track. "Small Fortune" suggests a samba and delivers some solid Wes Montgomery inspired guitar licks to go with flute and mellow horn charts.

"There Goes That" the title track, has some nice tenor and alto sax play that weaves around Obeido's intriguing guitar work. This is all supported again by the sinewy rhythms that are happily prevalent throughout all of the composer's tunes here.

"Ten Thirty" is another number that suggests different themes like a bit of guitar funk, then slides into some Miles Davis with Bill Ortiz 's muted trumpet fills. It's a subtle funk, fusion and Latin blend adeptly written and executed by Obiedo and band. The titles "Four Square," "Avila," "Somebody" and "Almost Certain" provide more pleasing Latin/jazz lushness and help to round out the ten-song disc.

There Goes That incorporates guitarist Ray Obiedo's remarkable Latin/funk/jazz artistry with his keen writing, arranging and producer skills. Hopefully, we won't have to wait so long for the next sample of his seasoned brand of the East Bay Sound.

Nicolas Folmer, orchestratist himself (he is especially the co-leader of the Paris Jazz Big Band) and unconditional of the composing style and interpreter of Michel Legrand who has proposed this confirmed project.
